Seattle, WA  – Ideal Innovations, Inc. (I3), a premier provider of forensic and biometric services, recently completed a 5-day Facial Identification Training course in Seattle, Washington. Topics covered included background on the discipline of facial comparisons, skeletal and muscular structures of the head and face, role of dermatology and hair growth in facial comparisons, age progression, and comparison methodologies and techniques.

The course is designed to be applicable to personnel at all levels of experience. Attendees included supervisors, facial examiners and detectives from various police departments in the Seattle area. One examiner remarked, “I will be able to more thoroughly examine return images to the probe, to provide better leads with more confidence that the subject is a good investigative lead.” Another examiner said, “This will be used to assist in developing solid leads prior to forwarding to Detective” and “Good class, well-presented, good selection of exercises.” One of the detectives commented, “I will be much more cautious when making identifications from surveillance photos.”

The training was developed and conducted by Lora Sims, who is Chairman of both the Facial Identification Scientific Working Group (FISWG) and the Facial Identification Subcommittee of the Organization of Scientific Area Committees (OSAC). The program reflects the latest thinking and procedures that will be incorporated into the forthcoming certification of face examiners by the International Association for Identification (IAI). Lora is a Senior Biometric Examiner at the U.S. Department of Defense Forensic and Biometric Agency, an IAI Certified Tenprint Examiner, and a member of the Face Identification subcommittee of the IAI’s Science & Practices Committee.
